Open Water Swimming – Staying Safe

Open Water Swimming
Swimming is one of the best activities during the summer and even during the cold months that people, kids and adults alike enjoy. You can find a swimming pool almost anywhere you look, but the beach hasn’t lost its charm. Swimming pools are for those who do not want to get dark and get sand on their feet. Open water swimming – whether on the beach or on a lake – is still very popular, especially during the summer when the weather is perfect for frolicking in the water. But swimming in open water entails more danger than swimming in a pool. Here are some tips on how to enjoy and stay safe in open water.
- Do not go to the deep end of the water. The depth of open water compared to swimming pools is very different. When you are in a pool, you know how deep it is, but in open water, sometimes the water gets so quickly. Open water swimming, as much as possible should only be done in the shallow part to avoid drowning and other incidents.
- Do not let small children out of your sight. If you are bringing your kids along, make sure that you attend to them all the time. Do not let them in the deep end of the water. Let them play on the shore with their beach toys.
- Supply children with floaters. Open water swimming, just like swimming in a pool, always has a risk of drowning, especially with children. Floaters are ideal for small children when swimming.
- Make sure the beach is not shark-infested. The open water is home to sea creatures and some beaches are shark infested. Do your research first before heading down to the beach.
Although open water swimming is very enjoyable, it is not for everyone. There are some people who are afraid of swimming in open water for fear of creatures lurking under the water. If you have kids around, make sure that you always keep a close eye on them.
